During this time, she also had 2 kids. The family heard that the self Help Group – the scheme can help you to earn. Suvarna was enlisted in the scheme. The govt servant managing the savings used the name of the scheme in acquiring loan for purchasing mini tempos for him. He started earning but never repaid the loan. All the women members got caught in the mess. Bank officers started harassing them for loan re payment. Suvarna’s husband started drinking more and more. He started beating her and the children. Suvarna was devastated and depressed.

Jamila Mulani
Jamila was the daughter from a middle-class Muslim family. According to their traditions, Jamila was married to Mr Rajjak Mulani at the age of 15 or 16. Rajjak was a good guy and didn’t have any any issues like addiction. He really loved Jamila. So Jamila actually had no problems in life. Years passed but she didn’t conceive. Relatives started gossiping. Jamila couldn’t bear that. With the cooperation of rajjak, infertility treatment was started. But it was all in vain. Jamila was restless. She started to coarse Rajjak for remarriage. He was not ready. Ultimately Jamila put forth the plan of Rajjak marrying her own younger sister. She thought that her sister would treat her well and Rajjak will get an heir. First year of the marriage was uneventful but then Marium, her sister, conceived and the problems started. There were a lot of arguments and Rajjak started taking Marium’s side. Unfortunately Jamila developed vitiligo, and it spread all over her body. Jamila became the disliked one. She was badly hurt. She started thinking of divorce. She had only third or fourth standard education. She was an expert at sewing but that income was not sufficient to sustain her,if she stayed alone. She had heard from neighbouring ladies that MBUP had supported a lot of women. She had heard many such stories. With that in mind, she came to the ‘Maitrin’ family counselling centre run by MBUP and registered her grievances. But the muslim community doesn’t have an act about alimony.
The MBUP counsellors explained the Muslim laws to her and told her that they will try their best. Rajjak was called for counselling 4-5 times; he was reminded of his love for Jamila and was appealed on humanitarian grounds. He was requested to provide 1000 Rs per month, so that Jamila could have a decent life.
Rajak agreed, started paying 1000 Rs at the centre on the first of every month. He has been doing that for last 7-8 years now. Jamila calls, confirms and collects the money next day. The counselors have become her close friends. She says, “None of the muslim women in Sangola get an alimony. You have not only made me a friend but because of you I can have two meals a day.”
