I am a 4 th standard pass woman brought up in an environment where I was not supposed to go out of our house. The life had been spent in doing the petty labour work. Our village is in a draught prone area where water management is very crucial aspect of life. I showed interest in the water awareness and management program conducted by Mata Balak Utkarsha Pratishthan. Subsequently I fought the election for the post of Sarpanch( village Head ) for my village Sangewadi and got elected too. I was worried about discharging my responsibilities as I was not knowing anything about governance. Encouraged by my participation in the water management program MBUP called me for a training program on “ Panchayat Raj”.( Governance of Village council ) . After the program was over I was a different person having full

confidence of handling my job. I started four SHGs after I became the Sarpanch of the village under the guidance of MBUP. I also completed the teacher's training course for Nursery teachers and started earning through stitching work. I constructed house by borrowing money from SHG , purchased one cow and supported my family financially. The son passed SSC exams and started working. My daughter completed her HSC and started helping me in my stitching work. We got her married after she completed eighteen years of age.

We dug a well in the village rivulet during my tenure as village head. However it could not hold water which became the talk of the town and people ridiculed us. However as usual MBUP came to our rescue by providing necessary funds for constructing a mini dam . We did a survey across the village and finalized the location of the dam. The results were immediate and striking .The well which was remaining dry started holding water to almost thirty to thirty five feet. Similarly all the nearby twenty wells started holding water throughout the year. This provided the much needed water to the cattle and we could fulfill the hygienic needs of the village .Few years later the villagers built another mini dam and now the village has become self sufficient in meeting its water demands. I attended several training programs conducted by MBUP like preparing spices , sheep rearing , preparing snacks etc . I have also got trained as “ Aarogyadoot” ( the healthcare specialist) and currently addressing various healthcare related issues of pregnant women and infants.

There has been a total transformation in Sharada before 1995 and now , the credit of which goes entirely to MBUP.
